This special event brings together a panel of successful women in the Bay Area who each play a different role that supports the advancement of women in technology related professions. You will hear the paths that brought them to the positions they hold today and their thoughts on ways to support women around us to become successful in their chosen careers.
Van Dang
Vice President, Law & Deputy General Counsel, Cisco Systems
Ms. Van T. Dang heads the Product and Technology Transactional Group at Cisco. The Group provides legal support to the company’s technology groups, marketing, manufacturing, strategic alliances, corporate purchasing, IT and other non-sale related groups. In addition, Ms. Dang manages both the M&A and anti-trust functions, and is responsible for privacy and data protection compliance at Cisco. Ms. Dang joined Cisco in 1996 when Cisco acquired Stratacom. Prior to working for Cisco, Ms. Dang was Vice President, Corporate Counsel of Maxtor Corporation (1992-1996). From 1987 through 1992, Ms. Dang was a corporate associate at Pillsbury Winthrop LLP (formerly, Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro). Ms. Dang received a J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law (1986) and a B.A. from the University of California, Irvine (1982). She serves on the High Tech Advisory Board at Santa Clara University School of Law and is Executive Sponsor of the Women in Technology Initiative at Cisco with the mission to increase women participation in the science and technology fields .
Lisa Kenkel
Partner, Fenwick & West LLP
Lisa Kenkel is a partner in the Intellectual Property Group and Chair of the Technology Transactions Group at Fenwick & West. She is also a member of the firm’s Executive Committee. Her practice focuses on counseling clients regarding the creation and protection of intellectual property, and structuring and negotiating joint-development, licensing and distribution relationships. She also advises clients on the intellectual property aspects of mergers, acquisitions, strategic alliances, and technology transfers. She has extensive experience negotiating technology transactions in the software, communications technologies and wireless industries. Ms. Kenkel has been involved in a number of technology mergers and acquisitions for various clients including Cisco Systems and VeriSign. Prior to joining Fenwick & West, Ms. Kenkel served as General Counsel of Corel Corporation, a developer of business and graphics software. Ms. Kenkel received a B.A. in Biochemistry from Queen’s University (1985) in Canada and an LL.B from Osgoode Hall Law School (1988) in Toronto.
Emily Ward
Senior Patent Counsel, eBay
Ms. Ward is senior patent counsel and the global head of the patent group for eBay -- the world’s online marketplace -- as well as PayPal – the global leader in online payments. The patent group handles eBay’s and PayPal’s worldwide patent prosecution, litigation, acquisition, and licensing matters. Ms. Ward has worked as a patent litigator and advisor for over fifteen years, and prior to joining eBay, represented clients in diverse areas of technology including: the Internet, computer hardware and software, semiconductors, neural networks, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, chemical processes and catalysts, and many other areas. Prior to eBay, she was a patent litigator at Weil, Gotshal, Jones, Day, and Fenwick & West. She has a degree in chemical engineering from Purdue University and is a registered patent attorney. She has spoken frequently and taught at various conferences and panels, and is recognized in Who’s Who in American Law.
Dr. Telle Whitney
President and CEO, Anita Borg Institute
Dr. Telle Whitney has 20 years of experience in the semiconductor and telecommunications industries and has a longstanding commitment to increasing the presence and impact of women in the technology fields. Dr. Whitney was part of the founding management team at Malleable Technologies, a startup in the programmable communication area. Malleable was acquired by PMC-Sierra in June 2000. She served as Vice President of Engineering at Malleable until its acquisition. Prior to joining Malleable, Dr. Whitney was an executive at Actel Corporation, where she held a number of diverse positions in the software engineering and chip design area. In 1994 Dr. Whitney co-founded the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing (GHC) conference along with Dr. Anita Borg. Today, the GHC conference is one of the Institute's flagship events, and the largest technical gathering for women in the world. Telle received her Ph.D. from Caltech, and her BS at the University of Utah, both in Computer Science.

Director of Intellectual Property, Cadence Design Systems
Mona leads Cadence’s IP initiatives and provides strategic guidance to Cadence's executive management on the use of IP in support of its business. She also manages the legal aspects of Cadence’s standards activities and open source software initiatives and has developed and implemented the strategy and internal processes to manage these activities worldwide.
